Chapter Twelve

Julie said the best place to summon a Ghede Loa was in a cemetery. Baron Samedi, along with La Croix and Maman Brigitte were amongst the Ghede—the Loa most closely concerned with the dead. And we’d need a few things. A plate of salt herring, hot peppers, roasted corn, roasted bananas, a glass—or, better, a whole gallon of rum—and ideally, a high-quality cigar.

“Are all the Loa so high maintenance?” I asked Julie.

“We’re summoning demigods, sister. Not two-bit hookers. We need to offer them something that shows we know what they like, something that recognizes that we honor their presence.”

Tracking down such an eclectic collection of items in the middle of the night was going to be a challenge. At least, it would be if we had any aversions to breaking and entering. Given the stakes, petty larceny was excusable. I usually avoided it on account of modern-day security systems, but Julie’s ability to materialize and dematerialize made it easier to evade most security systems. The only item difficult to locate was a high-quality cigar. Sure, most gas stations and grocery stores have some cigars. But Baron Samedi was apparently something of an aficionado. Try to give him one of those sweetened cheapos from the gas station and all it would do is piss him off.

Then, we still had to roast the corn and the bananas. Would have been easier if I still had hellfire. After we had all the items back at Sarah’s, Hailey grabbed her wand. I could do a fire spell, but for something that required precision like this, Hailey was the witch for the job.

Sarah rolled her eyes and took the corn and bananas away. “I have a stove, you know.”

I cocked my head. “Conventional appliances. Hadn’t thought of that.”

“Probably for the best,” Hailey said. “I’d probably just burn the hell out of them.”

Sarah took over with the stove. Roasting corn and bananas has quite an aroma. I didn’t generally crave human food. Compared to blood, it was pretty bland on my vampire palate.

With everything prepared, we hurried back to the cemetery.

“Kind of ironic,” I said, staring down at my grave. “Considering the fact that I was buried here, in this very grave, the first time I ever met Baron Samedi.”

It felt like everything had come full circle. It was on something of a whim that we came to Exeter to begin with. I just figured at the time it was a place that wasn’t New Orleans. It was far enough that it might take some time for the wild hunt to track us down. And I thought it might be possible to manipulate the Order into getting involved. But now the Order my father had been a high-ranking member of was decimated. They were no longer an Order. They were Legion. And we were back at my gravesite, asking the Loa who’d appeared to me and welcomed me to vampirism to come to our aid, to help a long-lost relative and a vampire who I never even knew existed, much less knew she was here already when I was still human.
